The ANSI Z136 Standards are the United States National Consensus Standards for laser safety. An updated (01 July 2009) edition of the ASC Z136 Conventions have been posted on the Z136.ORG web site. The document is available from the ASC Z136 General area or from the link on the Main Menu of the site.

Z136.4 CDV-1 Ballot Results
|
|
The ballot to approve the revision of the Z136.4 Recommended Practice for Laser Safety Measurements for Hazard Evaluation closed June 15, 2009; the public review of this same document will close June 29, 2009.
Of 35 eligible votes, 28 responses were received (80%) within the published balloting period, which makes this a valid ballot in accordance with Z136 Procedures, Clause 7.9 (a), “Three quarters (75%) of the ballots shall be returned (including abstentions) from those in the Balloting Group in order for the ballot to be valid.”
Of the 28 responses received, 27 votes were affirmative or affirmative with comment. The final vote was negative with reasons.

New Z136.5 Standard Now Available
|
|
The Laser Institute of America (LIA), Secretariat to the ANSI ASC Z136, is proud to announce the newly revised ANSI standard, Z136.5-2009 Safe Use of Lasers in Educational Institutions. Originally released in 2000, this standard addresses laser safety concerns and situations characteristic of the educational environment.

Updated ASC Z136 Procedures and Conventions Posted
|
|
As a result of the most recent audit required by ANSI, the ASC Z136 has updated procedures to comply with standard development requirements. In addition, the ASC Z136 has assembled updated conventions to guide SSC and TSC chairpersons in their work. See the links at the left of the main page of Z136.ORG to download both documents.

Results of Membership Ballots
|
|
Balloting on the approval of membership applications to ASC Z136 closed end-of-business Friday, August 29, 2008. Balloting has resulted in the appointment of Ms. Vangie Dennis as representative for the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), replacing Penny Smalley, the appointment of Mr. Richard Felten as primary representative (replacing Jerry Dennis), and Mr. Robert Faaland as secondary representative for the Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). Additional ballots resulted in the Appointment of Dr. Jeffrey Lodwick as representative for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), replacing Bob Curtis, the change of membership status for Ms. Penny Smalley from representative for AORN to Individual Member, the approval of a New Applicant - Organizational Member: American Academy of Dermatology (AAD); appointment of Dr. Mark Nestor as its representative, and approval of the New Applicant - Organizational (Company) Member: Kentek Corporation; appointment of Mr. William Arthur as its representative.
The summaries of consensus body votes by interest category will be posted in the ASC Z136 area of the website.
