ASC Z136 Procedures Updated and Approved
|
|
The reaccreditation of Accredited Standards Committee (ASC) Z136, Safe Use of Lasers under its recently revised operating procedures was administratively approved effective May 10, 2013 by the ANSI Executive Standards Council. This action, the successful completion of the reaccreditation process, closed the ASC Z136 audit conducted in June 2012.
Revisions to ASC Z136 Procedures were made to resolve findings of the audit and were discussed at length during the March annual meeting of the committee. After addressing concerns of committee responsibilities, membership participation, and clarification of terminology used and processes imposed, the committee unanimously approved these revisions and the document was submitted to ANSI.
A copy of the revised procedures is available from the main menu of the www.z136.org website. Many thanks go out to Ms. Barbara Sams, LIA Standards Director, for her careful record keeping and coordination of these revised procedures.

|
|
With the exponential growth of fiber-optic
telecommunications comes the need for well-trained
installation and service personnel. Guiding those
employees will be the new ANSI Z136.2 laser safety
standard, available from the Laser Institute of America.
The release of the standard, timed to coincide with the
annual meeting of the Z136 committee March 17 in
Orlando, has been more than 10 years in the making.

Opportunity for Technical Committee Members to NFPA
|
|
From: Sandra Stanek (sstanek@nfpa.org)
I am the staff liaison for NFPA 115 Laser Fire Protection. We are looking for new technical committee members to join out technical committee on Laser Fire Protection. Would you please post a general email to all members with the following information:
The NFPA is seeking public input on the next revision of NFPA 115 and is also seeking new technical committee members. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) develops, publishes and disseminates more than 300 consensus codes and standards intended to minimize the effects of fire and other risks. NFPA 115 provides minimum fire protection requirements for the design, manufacture, installation, and use of lasers and associated equipment. NFPA standards are generally revised every 3-5 years. The NFPA Technical Committee on Laser Fire Protection will soon be in its revision cycle for the 2015 edition.
Revisions take place over a two year period with committee members from various interest groups such as document users, enforcers, manufacturers, insurers and special experts.
